Coffee was first introduced to this country in the early 18th century, although it wasn’t very popular. In fact, many people preferred to drink tea until the years following World War II. By the mid-1900s, coffee was a staple for many working Americans. Businesses even started offering quick 15-minute coffee breaks.
Fast forward to 2022 and there are 4,067 businesses in the U.S producing coffee. For the past five years, this number has been steadily increasing by 7.2% each year. Judging by these numbers, it’s safe to say that Americans love coffee. Notably, some of the most popular brands include Folgers, Peet’s Coffee, Green Mountain, Dunkin’, Caribou, and Seattle’s Best. Among the greats is Maxwell House. This company, which was established in the late 1800s, is one of the largest coffee brands sold in the U.S.
A Brief History
Maxwell House coffee was first introduced by a man named Joel Owsley Cheek in 1892. The coffee’s namesake was its first large consumer, the Maxwell House Hotel. Today, the American production of this company is owned by Kraft Heinz. Throughout the rest of the world, Maxwell House is owned by JDE Peet’s.
“Good To the Last Drop”
The slogan used by the Maxwell House company, “good to the last drop,” is believed to have been said by the 26th President of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt, upon trying this coffee for the first time. The cup of coffee that the President got to enjoy is just like the coffee that is produced today.
The Maxwell House Original Blend is a medium roast made from 100% arabica beans. The flavor is described as balanced, rich, and flavorful. The company also prides itself on its ability to produce top-notch coffee that is smooth and not bitter. The smell that Maxwell House gives off has been described as a wonderful, fresh, and classic coffee aroma.
Nutritional Value
When looking at the nutritional value of coffee, whether it is Maxwell House or another brand, there is only 1 calorie for every 8 oz serving. Without any additives or sweeteners, coffee contains zero sugars and zero carbs.
Caffeine Content
When looking at the caffeine present in Maxwell House Original Blend coffee, there is 14 mg per fluid ounce. That means in a standard 8 oz drink there are 112 mg of caffeine. This is low for coffee, especially when comparing the caffeine present in other 8 oz servings.
How This Compares
On average, coffee can have anywhere from 70 mg to 200 mg of caffeine per 8 oz. The amount of caffeine that a cup of coffee contains can vary for several reasons. Some of these factors include how the coffee was brewed, the amount of coffee used during brewing, and what type of bean was used.
When looking at the caffeine present in other brands of coffee, it varies from that of Maxwell House. Some of the other top brands contain the following amounts of caffeine:
- Folgers- 112 mg per 8 ozPeet’s Coffee- 133 mg per 8 oz
- Green Mountain Breakfast Blend- 100 mg per 8 oz
- Seattle’s Best- 173 mg per 8 oz
- Dunkin’- 120 mg per 8 oz
- Caribou- 152 mg per 8 oz
Varieties
On top of its original medium roast coffee, Maxwell House offers other blends and roasts. Not only that, but you can also choose from ground coffee, whole beans, instant, K-cups, café style flavors, and even iced coffee.
Some of the popular roasts include their breakfast blend (a light roast), dark roast, gourmet roast (a medium roast), and smooth bold (a bold roast). There are also flavored varieties including vanilla and hazelnut. Further still, Maxwell House offers a 100% Columbian blend (a medium roast), a medium roast with half the caffeine, decaffeinated coffees, and a blend known as Max Boost.
Maxwell House MAX Boost
Maxwell House’s MAX Boost blends, a coffee blend the company first produced in 2017, can be found in three different strengths.
One is 1.25 times the normal amount of caffeine, one is 1.5 times the normal amount of caffeine, and the last one contains 1.75 times the amount of caffeine.
One 8 oz serving of this bold blend, depending on which strength you brew, can contain either 140 mg, 168 mg, or 196 mg of caffeine per 8 oz serving. This variety can be purchased both preground and in K-cups.
Maxwell House MAX Indulge
Around the same time that Maxwell House released the MAX Boost coffees, they also released another line called MAX Indulge. These coffee drink mixes are available in three flavors: Mocha, Mocha & Salted Caramel, and Mocha & S’mores.
Unlike the MAX Boost varieties that contain only coffee, these instant mixes contain sugar, milk, and instant coffee. One serving of powder contains 100 calories, 19 grams of carbs, 3 grams of fat, and 2 grams of sugar.
These coffee drink mixes are popular, especially with younger adults or people who like to experiment with flavors. To make this blend, simply mix 2 tablespoons with 8 oz of hot water to get a delicious, sweet, and caffeinated pick-me-up during the middle of the day.
Maxwell House Coffee & Caffeine
In one cup of original Maxwell House coffee, there is 112 mg of caffeine. This is lower when compared to other popular brands like Peet’s Coffee, Seattle’s Best, Dunkin’, and Caribou.
The caffeine content in one of the MAX Boost blends, however, is on the high end of the caffeine range.
This American coffee brand, which first burst onto the scene in 1892, is still one of the largest coffee brands sold in America today.
Available in many different blends and roasts, there is something available for every coffee drinker. The caffeine-content of Maxwell House also falls within the normal range for coffee, somewhere between 70 mg to 200 mg for every serving.
